Someone on your team has probably asked it. Your messaging app now offers an AI assistant, the big AI companies sell voices that talk, and booking apps sell AI that answers the phone. Why pay for anything else? It is a fair question, and some of these tools are free to start.
Clara Mind is an AI employee: software that answers a business’s phone and WhatsApp, in Portuguese or English, set up on that one business by us. Here is what the others do, as their help pages describe it.
AI that talks to customers, as described by its makers on 15 October 2026
| The kind of AI | What it does |
|---|---|
| An assistant inside a messaging app | Answers written chats from your product list and documents, and can book into a connected calendar |
| its help pages describe no phone calls | |
| limited countries, with a waitlist | |
| The big AI companies’ voice tools | Answer a phone line once a programmer connects one |
| one also has a do-it-yourself builder, in a test version | |
| A search engine’s AI | Calls businesses for its users, to ask prices and book |
| in the US | |
| A beauty booking platform’s AI | Answers calls and chats in its own app, from your client list, services, prices and policies, and books in that platform |
| not among the prices it showed us for Portugal | |
| A restaurant booking platform | Lists phone-call automation in its Portuguese prices, for reservations |
| how it works is not described | |
| Clara Mind | Answers your phone and WhatsApp, set up on your business by us, and logs or books in your real calendar |
Figure 1.Each of the others covers a different piece, and none of the ones we checked describes answering both the phone and WhatsApp for a business in Portugal.
What can each one do?
The messaging-app assistant is free to start and lives where many of your customers already write. You teach it from your product list and documents, and it can book into a connected calendar.
A beauty booking platform’s AI knows your services, prices and policies, and books straight into the platform where your bookings already live. That is a real advantage, though it was not among the prices it showed us for Portugal. In Portugal, one restaurant booking platform lists phone-call automation for reservations, without saying how it works.
One of the big AI companies also sells a do-it-yourself builder for a phone assistant, with a connection to your calendar. It is a test version, and you set it up yourself.
What is missing for a business in Portugal?
The phone and WhatsApp, together. The messaging-app assistant’s help pages describe written chats, not calls. The big AI companies’ tools answer calls, once someone builds and connects them. Covering both means two products, or a programmer, and teaching each one your business.
Then there is the language. Whether the messaging-app assistant answers well in European Portuguese, its pages do not say. Clara answers in Portuguese or English.
Putting it together yourself, or having it set up
| With the general tools | With Clara |
|---|---|
| You teach each tool your business | We set her up on your business |
| The phone and WhatsApp from different tools, or a programmer | The phone and WhatsApp in one, with a memory of every customer |
| A waitlist, a test version or a programmer’s time | Live in 7 to 10 business days for a standard set-up |
Figure 2.The general tools leave the assembling and the teaching to you, while Clara arrives set up on your business, on both channels.
When is the free option enough?
If your customers only write, the messaging app’s own assistant may be enough to start. It is free to start and can book into a connected calendar. If every booking already lives on one booking platform, that platform’s own AI may suit you, where it is offered.
If the phone still rings while your hands are busy and customers also write on WhatsApp, you need both, in one place. That is what Clara does, and your team stays the face of the business.
